What is Parity?

Recent media reports show that Atlanta Fire Fighters representatives have been less than successful in communicating our message of Parity.

Parity is not the same 4% raise the Mayor and City Council passed for police. The Fire Fighters were already $2080 behind in annual salary going into this budget cycle.

Parity for Fire Fighters is equal annual salary with their police counterparts. Historically, Atlanta, like the other major cities, paid police and firefighters the same annual salary.

At the end of his last term, Bill Campbell broke parity between fire and police. Mayor Franklin made a campaign commitment to the Fire Fighters to restore parity.

Parity for the Fire Fighters equals the same 4% raise as police, plus $2080.

Even with Parity (equal annual salary), Fire Fighters would earn about 30% less hourly than police because Fire Fighters work 16 hours more each week.

Vice President Jim Daws stated, “For the firefighters, parity is just basic fairness and that is the principal we are fighting to restore.”
