Fire Fighters take Parity Issue to Cascade

Today Atlanta’s Fire Fighters continue their struggle for equal pay and pension with Atlanta Police officers. At 11 AM, Fire Fighters will canvas the Cascade area, handing out flyers and appealing to citizens to contact Mayor Fanklin and the members of City Council and urge them to restore Fire Fighters to equal status with their police counterparts.

The Mayor ran on a commitment to restore parity, but now in the first year since her election that the city has a sufficient surplus to keep that commitment, she has actually proposed to widen the parity gap. The Fire Fighters endorsed Mayor Franklin and campaigned hard to secure her election, in part based on her assurances that she supported parity.

During the dispute over the tentative budget the Mayor and her allies on Council assured the Fire Fighters that, should there be a surplus from the 2004 budget, they would give the Fire Fighters priority. Atlanta Professional Fire Fighter Vice President Jim Daws stated, “We work longer hours, require more training and are more likely to be killed or injured on the job. Parity makes since politically, economically and morally. We’re used to being underpaid, but for us, parity is just basic fairness, and a principal for which we will fight ‘til the last dog dies.”
