Gold Shield Program
Atlanta Fire Fighters and the Gold Shield Foundation
Captain Mark McDonnell of Truck Company 11 currently serves as the Atlanta Fire Fighters representative to the Gold Shield Foundation. This foundation exists for the express purpose of assisting the surviving spouses and children of local firefighters and law enforcement officers killed or incapacitated in the line of duty. The Foundation provides affected families with financial assistance, advocacy, emotional support and serves as a receiving agency to channel donations from the greater community to the intended recipients. The Gold Shield Foundation undertakes to help these families put their lives back together and stands ready, for as long as necessary, to help the surviving families make any necessary adjustments.
The financial assistance given by the Foundation is derived from annual contributions from its members, charitable bequests from the public and special event fundraisers conducted by supporters. Atlanta Fire Fighters contribute a portion of the money raised for the Fill the Boot campaign to this cause. Professional guidance and advocacy is contributed on a pro bono basis from area banks, lawyers, accountants, financial advisors, psychology professionals and universities. The Gold Shield Foundation of Metro Atlanta, Inc. is a not-for-profit 501 c(3) organization and all contributions are 100% tax deductible. Corporate memberships are $1,000 annually, individual memberships are $100 annually and charitable contributions of any amount are graciously accepted.
